"I have had the privilege of having author John Brooks in my building several times over the past 6 years. He first came to my PK-5 grade school in 2006 with his very first title, Bobby Bright’s Greatest Christmas Ever. The presentation and book were a hit with our students, teachers, and parents. Over the next few years, Mr. Brooks visited every year right before Christmas and would share his newest title available. He eventually got to where he was making 4-5 presentations a day with our students, where he would share book one with the 1st graders and the next book in the series with the older grade levels. This way every year, there was a new presentation for that grade level.
All five of the books in this series focus on key elements in our everyday life. In Greatest Christmas Ever, we get to meet Bobby, his family, and the McGillicuddy’s. Life is ever adventurous in this always surprising family. This book focuses on family, the spirit of Christmas, and the love of imagination (or maybe not!) Book two, Christmas Heroics, takes the reader into the heart of an Oklahoma tornado. Once again, the reader is thrown into this amazing family who will do anything to keep everyone safe.
In book three, Bobby Bright’s Christmas in Spain, the reader gets to travel around the world to Spain. Not only is the story just as exhilarating as the previous two, but there are tons of cultural experiences that the reader might not have ever been privileged to know about. Books 4 & 5 are a combined flip book. In Lost at Sea, Bobby has a tragic and terrifying experience while still in Spain. Remington, Bobby's human friend, goes through all kinds of emotional ups and downs just thinking about the possibilities of what has happened to his little magical bulb. But, with the support of his family he is able to overcome the darkness that looms for Bobby and sees him saved. Finally in the final saga, the family returns to Oklahoma, reacquaints with old friends and family, and discovers the true meaning of family. This series was riveting right up to the final page. It left me wanting to read more!
I would have to say what is just as impressive as the books themselves, is the pure talent that Mr. John Brooks has in presenting to the students. I have seen many authors and he is at the top as far as his compatibility with the students and teachers he is presenting to. He keeps everyone engaged and entertained from the first moment until it is over. Students would hang around to see if they could get more “bulbese” out of him. You won’t be disappointed in this presentation or these books!"
